In 1997, Fox Animation Studios released their first blockbuster film, Anastasia, directed by Disney veterans Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, starring Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Christopher Lloyd, Hank Azaria, Bernadette Peters and the legendary Angela Lansbury.
The film is based on the historical events of the Romanov tragedy, and the possibility of there being a lone survivor; the Grand Duchess Anastasia.
Although this film managed to gross about $140 million at the box office worldwide, and remains the most successful film released by former Disney animator Don Bluth and Fox Animation Studios, it is still rather underrated compared to animated films released by Disney and Dreamworks. However, it is still quite popular among kids, royal followers, and fictitious history buffs.
Now, due to Disney’s relatively recent acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets, Anastasia is now officially part of the Disney family, because of this, many fans now consider Anastasia to be a Disney Princess.
