Romanov Family Portrait

The Romanov Family Portrait.

The Romanov Family Portrait is a fictional painting of the Romanovs that appears in Anastasia. All seven members of the Royal Family are featured in the portrait, including Alexei's pet dog, Joy.

History

Little is revealed about the true history of the painting, but it was most likely painted prior to the execution of the Royal Family. This is because at the time of her family's execution, Anastasia was only eight-years-old, and in the painting, she still appears to be that young, or possibly even younger.

Depiction of the Royal Family

Each member of the Royal Family is featured in the portrait; Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra, Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana and Maria, Tsarevich Alexei, and of course, Grand Duchess Anastasia. Also included is Alexei's pet dog, Joy, who survived the revolution and execution. The physical characteristics of the family are much different than their real appearances. Nicholas has red hair instead of brown, Alexandra has strawberry blonde hair instead of auburn, Olga has chestnut hair instead of chestnut blonde, Tatiana has orange hair instead of dark auburn, Maria has lush blonde instead of light brown and Alexei has platinum blonde instead of auburn hair. Anastasia's appearance is the only one which resemblances reality.

Before the birth of his son, Nicholas is said to have contemplated lifting the ban on female rulers in Russia established by emperor Paul around 1800. On the portrait Olga, the oldest child, sits down as the only person on the painting, in attire that seems modelled on the imperial robes of her father. This can be interpreted as that she was heir apparent, not the so sickly and weak Alexei.

Scene

Anya and Portrait

When an amnesia-stricken "Anya" entered the deserted Romanov Palace 10 years after the execution of the Royal Family, she soon stumbled upon the portrait of the Romanovs during an attempt to run away from Dimitri and Vladimir after being spotted by the two. However, she soon stopped, and happened to stand right beside the painted image of Anastasia in the portrait. Instantly, Dimitri noticed Anya's likeness to that of the young Anastasia, and immediatley took note of their several physical similarites. However, little did they know that Anya was, in fact, the older version of Anastasia from the painting.
